Income Tax Aadhaar Card Link

In order to complete your ITR (Income Tax Return), it is mandatory to link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card. The CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) had extended the deadline multiple times in 2022, but if you have missed them, you will have to pay a fine.

If you are trying to link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card after 1st July, 2022, you will have to pay a fine of Rs.1,000/- for the service. Your PAN may get inoperative if you don’t link it to your Aadhaar Card by the 1st April, 2023.

Link Aadhaar and PAN Online to File Your ITR

The late fees need to be paid in advance to link these two documents. Here is how you can make the payment-

Step-1:  Go to the e-Payment of Taxes page.

Step-2: Choose the ‘CHALLAN NO./ITNS 280’. Click on the ‘Proceed’ button to choose.

Step-3: On the Challan 280, select the (0021) INCOME Tax and the ‘Other Receipts’ option.

Step-4: Scroll down and choose your mode of payment, and fill in the remaining details as mentioned. Finally click on ‘Proceed’.

Step-5: In the next page, cross-check all information, agree to the terms and conditions, and click on ‘Submit to the Bank’.

Step-6: You will be redirected to your bank’s website, where you can complete the payment.

link your Aadhaar and PAN Card

After 4-5 working days of making the payment, you can link your Aadhaar and PAN Card. Follow these steps to do so-

Step-1: Login to the ITR website.

Step-2: On the dashboard, under the ‘Link Aadhaar to PAN’ option, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.

Step-3: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number in the respective blanks, and click on ‘Validate’.

Step-4: If your payment is verified by e-filing, you will see a pop-up message that ‘Your payment details are verified’. Click on ‘Continue’.

Step-5: To submit your Aadhaar link request, fill in the required details and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ button. 

Step-6: Enter the OTP that you receive in your mobile number. 

Step-7: Click on ‘Validate’ to finally submit your request.

 How to Check the Linking Status of Aadhaar & PAN

There are two ways to check if your Aadhaar and PAN card are linked. Take a look at them-

Pre-Login

You can check if your application to link your documents has been successful even without logging in. 

Step-1: Go to the homepage of the new ITR website, and click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ on the left side.

Step-2: Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’. 

Step-3: You will see a pop-up message on the screen telling you if your documents have been linked or not.

Post-Login

If you want to check the status of your linking after logging in, follow these steps- 

Step-1: Go to the new ITR website, and log in using your credentials.

Step-2: On your dashboard, click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’. 

Step-3: You can also go to My Profile → Link Aadhaar Status.

If your Aadhaar is already linked, your Aadhaar number will be displayed. If Aadhaar is not linked, you will see ‘Link Aadhaar Status’.

Link Your Aadhaar Card with ITR :-

  1. Visit the ITR website
  2. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ which you will find on the left-hand side of the interface or if you scroll down slightly
  3. Enter your PAN number followed by your Aadhaar number
  4. Enter your name as per your Aadhar Card.
  5. Click on the option ‘I have only a year of birth in the Aadhaar Card’ if only your birth year is shown as the date of birth on your Aadhaar card.
  6. Enter the code in the image captcha.
  7. People who are visually challenged, can choose to receive OTP instead of entering the code in the image captcha.
  8. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.

Your Aadhaar will now be linked to your PAN. However, for successful linking, your details must match in both the documents.

Everyone needs to link their Aadhaar Cards to their PAN cards. Only the following people are exempted-

  • Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, or Jammu & Kashmir

  • A non-resident as per the Income Tax Act, 1961
