The Green PIN is an instant PIN sent by a bank to a customer’s mobile number. This PIN can be used in ATMs to set or reset their Debit Card PIN.

How to Generate Green PIN?

Now that you know what Green PIN means, let us look at the various methods through which it can be generated -

Generating a Green PIN through your ATM is one of the simplest ways. Follow these steps to generate your Green PIN -

STEP-1: Insert your card into the ATM and select your preferred language. You might have to enter your registered mobile number and your Debit Card number based on your bank’s or the ATM’s rules.

STEP-2: Select the ‘Forgot / Create PIN (Green PIN)’ → ‘Generate OTP’ option. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.

STEP-3: Reinsert the Debit Card and select the language.

STEP-4: Again select the ‘Forgot / Create PIN (Green PIN)’ → ‘Validate OTP’ option. Please note that this OTP will be valid for 2 days and thus the next steps need to be completed within that period.

STEP-5: Enter the OTP you received on your phone when prompted and click ‘Continue’.

STEP-6: On the next screen, ‘Please Enter New PIN’ will be displayed. Create a new 4-digit PIN.

STEP-7: Confirm the PIN when the screen displays the message ‘Please Re-enter New PIN’. 

STEP-8: The next screen will confirm that ‘The PIN is Changed / Created Successfully’.


Once you know what Green PIN means, you can also generate it using missed call services. Follow these steps to generate a Green PIN -

STEP-1: Call the toll-free missed call banking number for Green PIN generation of your bank from your registered mobile number.

STEP-2: The call will get disconnected and you will receive an OTP on your mobile number. Please note that this OTP will be valid for 2 days and thus the new PIN needs to be created within that period.

STEP-3: Visit your nearest ATM with your Debit Card and insert it in the ATM slot. Select your preferred language. 

STEP-4: Select the ‘Forgot / Create PIN (Green PIN)’ → ‘Validate OTP’ option. 

STEP-5: Enter the OTP you received on your phone when prompted and click ‘Continue’.

STEP-6: On the next screen, ‘Please Enter New PIN’ will be displayed. Create a new 4-digit PIN.

You can also use SMS banking services offered by your bank to generate a new Green PIN. The steps to be followed are mentioned below -

STEP-1: Send an SMS to your bank’s number for generating new Green PINs in the format mentioned. Please send this message only from your registered mobile number.

STEP-2: You will receive an OTP on your registered number which will be valid for 2 days.

STEP-3: Then, visit your nearest ATM with your Debit Card and insert it in the ATM slot. Select your preferred language to continue. 

STEP-4: Select the ‘Forgot / Create PIN (Green PIN)’ → ‘Validate OTP’ option. 

STEP-5: Enter the OTP you received on your phone when prompted and click ‘Continue’.

STEP-6: On the next screen, ‘Please Enter New PIN’ will be displayed. Create a new 4-digit PIN.

STEP-7: Confirm the PIN when the screen displays the message ‘Please Re-enter New PIN’. 

STEP-8: The next screen will confirm that ‘The PIN is Changed / Created Successfully’.


Another option to generate a Green PIN is by making a call to the customer care or IVR number of your bank. Then, follow these steps -

STEP-1: Call the IVR number from your registered mobile number and follow the instructions.

STEP-2: Select your language and then ‘ATM and Prepaid Services.’

STEP-3: Then, enter your Debit Card number twice when asked and confirm it.

STEP-4: You will also be asked to enter the Bank Account number associated with your Debit Card. Enter it twice and confirm it.

STEP-5: When all details are confirmed, you will receive an SMS from your bank with your OTP. The OTP will be valid for 2 days within which a new Green PIN needs to be generated.

STEP-6: Once you have the OTP, visit your nearest ATM with your Debit Card and insert it in the ATM slot. 

STEP-7: Select the ‘Forgot / Create PIN (Green PIN)’ → ‘Validate OTP’ option. 

STEP-8: Enter the OTP you received on your phone when prompted and click ‘Continue’.

STEP-9: On the next screen, ‘Please Enter New PIN’ will be displayed. Create a new 4-digit PIN.

STEP-10: Confirm the PIN when the screen displays ‘Please Re-enter New PIN’. 

STEP-11: The next screen will confirm that ‘The PIN is Changed / Created Successfully’.


You can also generate a new Green PIN through internet banking by following these steps -

STEP-1: Log in to the official Internet banking portal using your credentials.

STEP-2: Go to the ‘Debit Cards’ → ‘Green PIN generation’ option.

STEP-3: Select the card for which you want to generate the PIN.

STEP-4: Confirm all the requested details and an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. The message ‘Green PIN has been successfully generated’ will be displayed on the screen.

STEP-5: Visit your nearest ATM with your Debit Card and the OTP. Insert the card in the ATM slot. 

STEP-6: Select the ‘Forgot / Create PIN (Green PIN)’ → ‘Validate OTP’ option. 

STEP-7: Enter the OTP you received and click on ‘Continue’.

STEP-8: On the next screen, ‘Please Enter New PIN’ will be displayed. Create a new 4-digit PIN. Confirm the PIN when the screen displays ‘Please Re-enter New PIN’.

Previously when you got a new Debit Card or forgot your PIN, the new PIN was sent to you via a mailer. You could then use that PIN to generate your new PIN. This process was not just time-consuming but also involved wastage due to printing.

The validity of the Green PIN depends on your bank. It is valid from 24 hours to 72 hours based on which bank you are a customer of. 

The Green PIN is also referred to as an OTP or a ‘One Time Password’. It is sent to your registered mobile number from your bank. The Punjab National Bank has a 6-digit Green PIN or OTP which is valid for 72 hours after delivery.

The Green PIN is delivered to you via SMS while the paper PIN is delivered to you printed on paper via postal service.
